For thousands of years, my ancestors have struck a fine and intimate balance with the environment. The environment, in turn, has sustained itself through a network of interconnections in which plants and animals alike could coexist in a symbiotic relationship. These “Interconnections” form the subject of this print. The outside of the circle is made up of four cedar trees, representing the plant environment. The tree at the bottom of the print appears as a solitary tree, while those at the sides represent treelines leading into and reflected by the water. The background of the top half of the print is indicative of the sky, while the bottom half are two rivers leading into the sea. Forming a snowflake pattern (evoking the element of weather) are eight salmon—four males and four females. These fish grow and mature within a balanced ecosystem. The four yellow paddles represent the First Nations who live in the territory and who rely on the success of environmental interconnections. “Interconnections” is rendered in the ancient Coast Salish style. It appears in the form of a spindle whorl and is done in respect of my Great Grandmother, Mary Moon, who was a Salish weaver. “Interconnections” is a limited edition print using the giclée method of printmaking. This print was released during October of 2003 and was printed at the artist’s own studio in Comox B.C. A total of 109 prints bear the title “Interconnections” and are signed by Andy Everson: 99 in the primary edition bearing the numbers 1/99 through 99/99; 9 Artist’s Proofs; and 1 Printer’s Proof. The acid-free Moab Entrada 100% cotton rag paper measures 13x13.5 inches. Image size measures about 12x12 inches.
