This mask was carved from alder wood and painted to represent Mediik, or Grizzly Bear, by Tsimshian artist Mike Epp. Carved in the Tsimshian style, it portrays the normally fearsome aspect of Grizzly in a gentle, human way. In native mythology, Bear is the closest of all animals to Humans, and was treated with respect as an honoured Elder.
